THE ACT OF THE HOSTS – Works from the Fundação Leal Rios Collection in the Serralves Collection

The Leal Rios Collection, built by brothers Manuel and Miguel Leal Rios since 2003, was partially deposited at Serralves in 2021. This group of works is highly significant for several reasons: because it represents a genuine way of thinking (a very particular perspective on art from the last two decades), and can therefore be identified as a collection (which is very different from a mere assemblage of works); because it brings to Serralves a body of works by artists who were already part of the Collection (as a result of acquisitions or previous deposits), adding elements that allow a deeper understanding of their respective trajectories and thus helping the Foundation to achieve one of the main goals of its collecting activity, namely the creation of significant bodies of work by specific artists; because it adds to the Serralves Collection artists and works that make it possible to broaden and enrich perspectives on artistic production from periods that are perhaps less fertile, namely the 2010s; because it goes far beyond the domestic scale that is inevitably associated with Portuguese private collections — something that can partly be explained by the establishment of a Foundation that developed in parallel with the collection and which, since 2011, has had a physical space in Lisbon where the works could be exhibited, stored and conserved (which does not prevent a significant number of the works presented in Auto dos Anfitriões, whose installation requires true museological conditions — installation teams and exhibition spaces —, from being shown — to the public, but also to the buyers themselves — for the first time since they were acquired).

The title of this exhibition revives that of a theatrical play by the sixteenth-century Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões (adapted from a text by the Roman-era poet Plautus, which to this day continues to inspire playwrights, stage directors, composers and film directors) — and, with it, a history of derivations, plunderings and deviations. It immediately evokes three of the characteristics that distinguish the exhibition of the Leal Rios Collection: firstly, it highlights Serralves’ hospitable vocation, adding meaning to the idea that its Collection is a “collection of collections”; secondly, it argues for the convergence of times and geographies (the result of those very “derivations, plunderings and deviations”) as one of the characteristics shared by dramaturgy and contemporary art; lastly, it calls upon theatre and certain texts surrounding this discipline as a way of shedding light on particular aspects of contemporary artistic practices.

The exhibition, organised by the Serralves Foundation, is curated by Ricardo Nicolau and coordinated by Isabel Braga.

 

AUTO DOS ANFITRIÕES – Obras da Coleção da Fundação Leal Rios na Coleção de Serralves

A Coleção Leal Rios, construída pelos irmãos Manuel e Miguel Leal Rios desde 2003, foi parcialmente depositada em Serralves em 2021. Este conjunto de obras é muito significativo por várias razões: porque representa um verdadeiro pensamento (uma perspetiva muito particular sobre a arte das últimas duas décadas), podendo por isso ser identificado como uma coleção (o que é muito diferente de uma mera reunião de obras); porque traz para Serralves um conjunto de obras de artistas que já integravam a Coleção (fruto de aquisições ou de depósitos anteriores), adicionando aspetos que permitem compreender melhor os seus respetivos percursos e ajudando, desta forma, a Fundação a alcançar um dos grandes objetivos do seu labor colecionista, que passa por ter núcleos significativos de obras de determinados artistas; porque acrescenta à Coleção de Serralves artistas e obras que permitem ampliar e enriquecer as perspetivas sobre a produção artística de períodos em que ela é porventura menos fértil, nomeadamente os anos 2010; porque ultrapassa largamente a escala doméstica que é fatalmente associada a coleções privadas portuguesas — o que é em parte explicável pela constituição de uma Fundação que funcionou paralelamente à coleção e que tem, desde 2011, um espaço físico em Lisboa onde as obras puderam ser expostas, guardadas e conservadas (o que não impede que uma parte significativa das obras apresentadas em Auto dos Anfitriões, cuja instalação implica verdadeiras condições museológicas — equipas de montagem e áreas de exposição —, esteja a ser mostrada — ao público, mas também aos próprios compradores — pela primeira vez desde o momento em que foram adquiridas.

O título desta exposição recupera o de uma peça teatral do poeta português do século XVI Luís Vaz de Camões (adaptada de um texto do poeta da época romana Plauto, até hoje inspiração para dramaturgos, encenadores, compositores e realizadores de cinema) — e, com ele, uma história de derivações, pilhagens e desvios. Evoca imediatamente três das características que singularizam a exposição da Coleção Leal Rios: em primeiro lugar, sublinha a vocação hospitaleira de Serralves, e acrescenta sentido à ideia de que a sua Coleção é uma “coleção de coleções”; por outro lado, defende a confluência de tempos e geografias (frutos das tais “derivações, pilhagens e desvios”) como uma das características partilhadas pela dramaturgia e a arte contemporânea; em último lugar, apela ao teatro e a certos textos em torno desta disciplina, como forma de iluminar determinados aspetos das práticas artísticas contemporâneas.

A exposição, organizada pela Fundação de Serralves, é comissariada por Ricardo Nicolau e tem coordenação de Isabel Braga.
