THE OBSERVER’S EFFECT: AROUND PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE NORLINDA AND JOSÉ LIMA COLLECTION

Conceived from the Norlinda and José Lima Collection, the exhibition starts from the works cataloged in the respective collection as “photographs”, in order to relate them to other works of different categories – video, installation, painting or drawing – and with which it shares the theme of invoking, directly or indirectly, mechanisms of human perception and attentive observation of the world.
The project is inspired by the so-called “Observer’s effect” of quantum physics, which measures the changes that the act of observing has on the objects contemplated: “a conscious mind can directly affect reality”. Considering this premise, the selection of works gathered in this exhibition intends to verify, from different approaches, whether our gaze can transform the world. Or not.
Between light and darkness, contemplation and unconsciousness, entropy and order, painting and photographic images, fixed or in motion, digital or analog, this exhibition offers a reflection on how we look to build a reading of the collection that it transcends the boundaries between disciplines and, in which, spectators are called to exercise their visual acuity.
O EFEITO DO OBSERVADOR: À VOLTA DA FOTOGRAFIA NA COLEÇÃO NORLINDA E JOSÉ LIMA

Concebida a partir da Coleção Norlinda e José Lima, a exposição parte das obras catalogadas no respetivo acervo como “fotografias”, a fim de as relacionar com outras obras de distintas categorias – vídeo, instalação, pintura ou desenho – e com as quais partilha a temática da invocação, direta ou indiretamente, dos mecanismos de perceção humana e da observação atenta do mundo.
O projeto inspira-se no designado “Observer’s effect” [Efeito do Observador] da física quântica que mede as alterações que o ato de observar tem sobre os objetos contemplados: “uma mente consciente pode afetar diretamente a realidade”. Considerando esta premissa, a seleção de obras reunidas nesta mostra pretende verificar, a partir de diferentes aproximações, se o nosso olhar pode transformar o mundo. Ou não.
Entre a luz e a escuridão, a contemplação e a inconsciência, a entropia e a ordem, a pintura e as imagens fotográficas, fixas ou em movimento, digitais ou analógicas, esta exposição oferece uma reflexão sobre como olhamos para construir uma leitura da coleção que transcende os limites entre disciplinas e, na qual, os espectadores são chamados a exercer a sua acuidade visual.
